Toms Race Weekend at Brands Hatch

Toms Race Weekend at Brands Hatch

Last weekend saw the penultimate race of the British GT Championship.

Round 8 of the British GT Championship took place over the weekend at Brands Hatch in Kent.

Qualifying 3rd following a combined time, Tom lined up on the grid with an hour-long stint ahead of him.

Lights out and the competition was immediately apparent as he dropped back into fourth on the first lap.

Hot on the tail of the Mustang ahead, the close-quarters nature of racing at Brands was becoming obvious. Tom took P3 at turn one, battling with the Mustang and going two-abreast around Druids, managing to maintain his position.

At this point the safety car was called out for an incident involving the Motus One McLaren which needed removing from the track. This would see the grid bunched even closer, but brought with it the opportunity of catching up to the Audi and Porsche that had begun to pull ahead in P1 and P2.

When the green flag was waved Tom was heading toward P2 and with the Porsche ahead carrying a success penalty from Spa, the opportunity for a faster changeover and taking the position – or put distance behind was appearing.

However, this started to slip away as Tom had to defend hard against the McLaren behind him. A second safety car kept the McLaren close, but with the safety car period ending, Tom was unable defend against the overtake.

Desperate to regain his position, he spotted an opportunity on the inside line against the McLaren that had left the door open. This didn’t quite go to plan as Tom was unable to cleanly overtake, making contact that spun out the McLaren! This move also saw an Aston Martin take advantage of the situation and overtake into P3.

With the McLaren off the track and picking up a puncture, the safety car was called out for a third time and the Toyota Gazoo Racing Supra would receive a penalty after the changeover.

Restarting once more, the pit window opened and Tom raced to the pit lane for an early driver change. Jordan went out for his stint, but was soon recalled to serve the penalty picked up in the incident between Tom and the McLaren.

This saw Jordan lose positions and dropped as far back as P7.

With some hard racing over the course of his hour-long stint, Jordan made it back up to P6 where he would finish the race.

Tom:

Coming away from Brands Hatch, I can very confidently say we unlocked potential from the car. Our ability to attack during the race has been the strongest this weekend out of all the previous races, and I see this as a major confidence boost heading to Donington.

The result of p6 does not reflect the speed and newfound trust I have in the car. It’s a bit disappointing especially because of the penalty I picked up, if I had been a bit more cautious we might have avoided that. It’s difficult to factor everything in when you’re racing, I saw a gap and I went for it but it didn’t work out. Despite this, I am very happy with my performances in the race and qualifying. I give my thanks to the team and sponsors for their efforts over the weekend.

Brands is a tricky circuit to overtake on and the close racing meant that we were all having to defend while trying to make our way forward. It’s a lot of fun with some really unique challenges you don’t see at every track, especially those steep hills.

Now heading on to the last race of the season at Donington, it’s where we got our first podium last time, so I’m hoping we can go out and do it again, I feel like we’re in a much better position at this end of the season, but we’re not the only team that’s made improvements.

This season has been so much fun and I’ve really enjoyed racing the Supra, hopefully we can make the last race of the season a good one.
