Edgar tests his mettle

Edgar tests his mettle

PF International 1st Dec 19

After a summer of Ginetta Junior preparation this was Tom’s first time back in a kart since August, he also moved up into the Senior class to compete against the top tier in karting for the first time.

It was a strong 36 driver line up, featuring a plethora of British Championship drivers – some of whom have been multiple British, European and World Champions in various karting classes.

Friday’s testing went well, finishing only two tenths off the leader, but the session was gruelling and in a heavier kart with high kerbs Tom suffered with damaged ribs. This resulted in him spending less time on track as he would have liked to, however he still managed to set competitive times.

With an excessive amount of ice and fog featured in Saturday’s testing, Tom’s time out on track was again cut short.

Sunday was still frosty but after a short delay the meeting got underway. Tom qualified a respectable 22nd out of the 36 competing, not bad for the youngest driver out there.

The track looked wet for the Pre Final but was drying fast. The team took a gamble and decided to send out the kart on wets. This looked good for the first few laps but as the track dried he lost competitive pace along with almost all the positions he had gained early on – finishing 21st, which became his grid slot for the final.

Tom had a great start in the final making up numerous places. As he joined the midfield he got stuck into the battle. He had a good scrap with a number of much older and more experienced drivers but unfortunately after only six laps there was a bad accident and out came the red flag putting an end to the race.

Tom was classified a very respectable seventeenth at the end, a good result in his first Senior race.
