Ginetta Junior Scholarship
Tom headed to Blyton Park last week to compete against 66 other hopefuls in the Ginetta Scholarship Shootout.
The event is held at Ginetta’s own test track over the course of three days where drivers are assessed on a range of motorsport abilities in what’s claimed to be one of the most sought-after prizes in UK motorsport.
The winner would earn themselves the use of a G40 Junior race car and entry into championship, along with insurance, consumables, tyres and fuel plus professional car preparation from an experienced team for the duration of the season.
Across all three days the track layout was changed from the qualification day to the final day and Tom was able to adapt to the changes quickly. Each qualification day saw 33 drivers participate before narrowing down to 24 drivers for the final day. From this, 12 drivers were then taken through to the afternoon before being whittled down to the top six drivers who battled it out, on a new track layout, to take the prize home. Tom impressed judges and made it to the final 12 in the competition.
As well as driving ability all drivers were tested on their professionalism throughout media and fitness sessions.
The judging panel consisted of Ginetta Development Drivers, Charlie Robertson and Mike Simpson as well as 2018 Ginetta GT5 Champion James Kellett and experienced drivers Sennan Fielding and Jake Hill. Adam Smalley and James Taylor the previous two winners were on hand to offer advice across the three days.
A fantastic experience for young Edgar and one which he learned a lot from. Perhaps to Tom’s detriment in the Judging he had actually already secured a drive in the championship for 2020 with Douglas Motorsport.
“I’m really excited for the next stage in my racing career. I’m looking forward to working with Douglas Motorsport in the build up to next year’s season and to develop my race-craft. They’re really impressive and I’ve loved the time I have spent with them so far.” – Tom Edgar
